The Therapy Dog Handler and their Therapy Dog provide emotional support and companionship to participants at our adult day service for individuals with memory loss. This volunteer role involves guiding the therapy dog through interactions with participants, enhancing their well-being through positive, comforting, and therapeutic encounters. The presence of a well-trained therapy dog can offer joy, reduce stress, and foster a sense of connection and calm among participants.

Basic Requirements:

Completion of volunteer application and interview.Successful completion of appropriate screenings Hilltop Residential Criminal background check without CAPS or MVR, Seasonal Flu Shot, TB test Completes program orientation and position specific training. (2 hours of training)Dog must be certified by a recognized organization such as (Therapy Dog Alliance, Therapy Dogs International, etc.) Proof of certification and insurance required.Dog must have up-to-date vaccination records.  Copy of vaccination records required.Volunteer serves as primary handler and expert on their dog’s behavior and limitations.Dog must be on a leash at all times and under the control of handler.Dog must be friendly, patient, gentle and at ease in all situations.Dependable and responsible.Maintain client and family confidentiality.Minimum age requirement: 21Good listening and communication skills.Completes and submits volunteer hours monthly.Abide by all Hilltop policies/procedures and Code of Conduct.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteer will comply with the standards and best practices of Therapy Dog Certification and interaction while assessing resident and participant interest in petting, holding, and cuddling the dog. Handler will assess the stress level of dog in interactions to determine pet’s wellbeing and appropriate length of visit.Conduct Therapy Sessions: Visit participants with the therapy dog, engaging in one-on-one or group interactions to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support.Facilitate Interactions: Guide the therapy dog in safe and appropriate interactions, ensuring that participants can pet, interact with, and enjoy the dog in a manner suited to their comfort and health.Observe and Adapt: Monitor participants’ reactions to the therapy dog, adapting interactions to meet individual needs and ensuring that both the dog and the participants are comfortable and safe.Maintain Safety and Cleanliness: Ensure the therapy dog is well-groomed, clean, and up-to-date with vaccinations. Maintain hygiene by following facility protocols for cleanliness and safety.Coordinate with Facility Staff: Communicate with facility staff to schedule visits, discuss residents' needs, and address any concerns related to the therapy dog’s presence and interactions.Promote Well-being: Encourage and support positive emotional responses from participants, providing reassurance and comfort through the therapy dog’s presence.Handle Documentation: Complete any necessary documentation related to the therapy dog’s visits, including feedback forms and incident reports, if applicable.

(program orientation (1hour) and Hilltop Drivers Course (4 hours)).Proficiency in driving and navigation.Ability to work with diverse populations.Strong adaptability and problem-solving skills.Dependable, responsible, and consistent. Maintain client and family confidentiality. Minimum age requirement: 21.Good listening and communication skills. Completes and submits volunteer hours monthly. Abide by all Hilltop policies/procedures and Code of Conduct.

Performance Responsibility:

Provide transportation for Connections Programming participants to and from local businesses or scenic locations so that participants of Connections can participate in activities.   Expected time commitment will be approximately 4 hours monthly.Dress code: casual and appropriate for position responsibilities. Maintains open communication with other team members, reporting all concerns to supervisor. Notifies supervisor if not able to make scheduled shift.

Provide transportation for Pathways Village residents to and from local businesses so that residents of Connections can run errands at a set, pre-determined time.     Expected time commitment will be approximately 4 hours monthly.Dress code: casual and appropriate for position responsibilities. Maintains open communication with other team members, reporting all concerns to supervisor. Notifies supervisor if not able to make scheduled shift.

The Weekly Shopping Support Volunteer plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents of The Fountains of Hilltop by assisting with a weekly outing to a local grocery store. Thess weekly outings to either Wal-Mart or City Market takes place on Tuesday's at 1:00pm and Thrifing takes place on Wednesday's at 9am. Volunteers in this role would accompany residents and staff to the grocery store that is scheduled for the week, assist residents with navigating the grocery store, obtaining their items and checking out.  This role helps to promote the safety and provides supportive assistance to the residents in these settings.

Thrifting

Wednesdays at 9am- August 5, 12, 19, 26 

Basic Requirements:

Completes program orientation and position specific training. (Approximately two hours) Minimum age requirement of 16 Ability to lift, push or pull 25 lbs Must wear name badge Positive attitude. Dependable and responsible. Maintain resident and family confidentiality. Ability to be nonjudgmental and empathetic. Good listening and communication skills. Completes and submits volunteer hours monthly. Abide by all Hilltop policies/procedures and Code of Conduct.

Key Responsibilities:

Assistance and Support: Accompany residents on community outings to the grocery store, providing physical support and assistance as needed, including helping with mobility, navigation, and social support.Safety and Supervision: Ensure the safety and well-being of residents during outings by adhering to safety protocols and addressing any concerns with staff that arise.Engagement: Foster a positive and engaging atmosphere by encouraging social interaction, and conversationLogistical Coordination: Connect with facility life enrichment team to understand outing logistics, transportation arrangements and how the volunteer can assist with preparing any necessary materials and supplies.  Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with residents, and facility staff to ensure that all needs are met and to address any issues promptly.Feedback: Gather feedback from residents about their experiences and report any concerns or suggestions to the Life Enrichment Coordinator for continuous improvement of the outing opportunities.
