Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Assault Services Internship

Description

Latimer House offers an educational and experiential internship opportunity for students interested in intimate partner violence and sexual assault services. This unpaid internship provides hands-on experience in various aspects of case management and support services. Interns will gain valuable insights into community-based case management, safehouse services, crisis intervention, and support group facilitation.

Basic Responsibilities

  • Completion of volunteer application and interview
  • Completion of Practicum paperwork, such as learning goals and other agreement forms, by student, university supervisor, and Latimer House Leadership
  • Successful completion of appropriate Hilltop Non-Residential Background Check without CAPS or MVR, TRAILS Child Abuse Registry Screening, and Fingerprinting as required by grants
  • Completion of program orientation and position-specific training: 15 hours Domestic Violence & 30 hours Sexual Assault
  • Computer and organizational skills
  • Dependable and responsible
  • Maintain client and family confidentiality
  • Abilities to be nonjudgmental, tolerant, patient, empathetic and handle high stress during crisis situations
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Complete and submit volunteer hours to position supervisor monthly
  • Abide by all Hilltop policies/procedures and Code of Conduct
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull 20 lbs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shadowing and Case Management: Shadow case managers in their daily tasks, gaining exposure to community-based case management, safehouse services, crisis calls, and support groups.  Assist in conducting participant intakes under the supervision of case managers and the site supervisor.
  • Support Group Facilitation and Education: Co-facilitate support groups for individuals affected by intimate partner violence and sexual assault.  Assist in preparing and delivering educational presentations for community partners and stakeholders. 
  • Crisis Call Response: Answer crisis calls under the guidance and supervision of case managers and the site supervisor.  Implement effective listening skills and crisis intervention techniques as outlined in trainings and manuals.
  • Staff Meetings and Professional Development: Attend appropriate staff meetings, including morning huddles, bi-weekly all-staff meetings, and professional development sessions.  Engage actively in discussions and contribute to team efforts and learning.
  • Supervision and Learning Goals: Participate in regular one-on-one meetings with the site supervisor (and clinical supervisor, if applicable) to discuss progress and ensure that individual learning goals are being met.  Develop and adhere to an individual learning contract to maximize the internship experience.
