Description

The Outdoor Activity Facilitator Volunteer will assist with organizing, leading, and supporting various outdoor recreational activities for young adults residing in our program. These activities include, but are not limited to, fishing, hiking, sporting events, and other outdoor excursions. The goal is to provide residents with opportunities for physical exercise, relaxation, social interaction, and skill-building, while helping to foster a sense of community and connection to nature.

Basic Requirements:

  • Completion of volunteer application and interview.
  • Successful completion of appropriate screenings (Hilltop Non-Residential Criminal Background check without CAPS or MVR, TRAILS Child Abuse Registry screening, and finger printing)
  • Completes program orientation and position specific training. (One hour program orientation)
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Strong leadership, public speaking, and adaptability skills
  • Dependable, responsible, and consistent.
  • Maintain client and family confidentiality.
  • Minimum age requirement: 18 or 14 with adult supervision
  • Good listening and communication skills.
  • Completes and submits volunteer hours monthly.
  • Abide by all Hilltop policies/procedures and Code of Conduct.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Activity Planning and Coordination:

    • Work with the Program Coordinator to plan outdoor activities such as fishing trips, hiking outings, sporting events, or other recreational activities.

    • Assist with obtaining necessary equipment and supplies for each activity.

    • Help set a positive tone for the activity by encouraging participation and inclusivity.

  • Activity Facilitation and Support:

    • Lead or assist in guiding activities, ensuring all residents have an opportunity to participate in a meaningful way.

    • Provide instructions, safety guidelines, and support for each activity, including basic skills training (e.g., how to fish, how to hike safely, sports fundamentals).

    • Encourage team-building and positive group dynamics through cooperative and fun activities.

  • Resident Engagement:

    • Foster a supportive and positive environment during activities, creating a space where residents feel comfortable and valued.

    • Engage with residents in a friendly, open manner, encouraging healthy socialization and personal connections.

    • Assist residents in overcoming challenges during activities, offering support and encouragement where needed.

  • Safety and Well-being:

    • Ensure the safety of all participants by adhering to safety protocols and guidelines for outdoor activities.

    • Carry out pre-activity risk assessments, ensuring all necessary precautions are taken (e.g., first aid kits, weather readiness).

    • Monitor residents during activities, providing guidance and support to ensure everyone’s well-being.

  • Post-Activity Support:

    • Help with the clean-up and packing up of equipment, ensuring everything is accounted for and safely stored.

    • Facilitate a debrief or reflective discussion after activities, allowing residents to share their experiences and provide feedback.
